PROJECT

Third and fourth graders are participating in the Symbolic Migration Monarch Butterfly Project, sponsored by Journey North. Students made a paper butterfly and attached a message for a student in Mexico. The paper butterflies joined thousands of others at a staging area in Minnesota. Then they "flew" down to Mexico for the winter. Our symbolic butterflies are international ambassadors to the people of Mexico.

When these butterflies migrate back north, (along with the real monarchs), will the butterflies that we receive be ours? Probably not, and that is part of the project.

Our butterflies may come back to New Jersey, or they may travel to another state like Texas or Virginia. There's also a possibility that our monarchs will migrate all the way up to Canada!

The butterflies that we receive could be from students anywhere in the North America.

Find out more about this awesome project and participate at home by watching the real migration, visiting the gallery of butterflies, and so much more...
